Leafs Invite Gillies to Camp

Training camp opens tomorrow, and Toronto made a minor move today by inviting goaltender Jon Gillies to camp on a professional tryout. The 30-year-old journeyman netminder has bounced around several NHL clubs, including the Flames, Blues, and Devils, but has spent most of his career in the American League. He hasn’t played since the 2022-23 season, during which he made three appearances for the Columbus Blue Jackets and earned one win. However, most of his time that season was spent with the Tucson Roadrunners, where he recorded a 5-8-2 record in 15 appearances. This addition is likely intended to fill out the camp roster, but if Gillies has a positive training camp, he could earn an opportunity with the Marlies in the American League. Additionally, adding depth to the roster is always beneficial, especially with Matt Murray and Joseph Woll dealing with injuries. It’s never a bad idea to have extra insurance. We’ll see how things go for Gillies.
Unfortunately, I must conclude this brief article with some difficult news. Vancouver’s Dakota Joshua has released a statement announcing that he will miss time while undergoing treatment for testicular cancer. Although this is a Leafs-focused blog, the hockey world will surely come together to support Dakota through this challenging time. I wish him a speedy and full recovery.
Thanks, as always, for reading.
