My Thoughts on Nick Robertson (Signed 1 year $875,000)

With NHL training camps opening this month, I thought it was the right time to bring my blog back for another season. Before diving into my thoughts on the Nick Robertson situation with the Leafs, I must first extend my condolences to the Gaudreau family following the tragic passing of Johnny and Mathew. As a fan still processing this immense loss, finding the right words is hard. However, as fans, we can cherish the positive memories Johnny left us, whether during his time in Calgary or Columbus. Johnny was an extraordinarily talented player who made the game look effortless. While it's difficult, focusing on the memorable moments he gave us might offer some solace.
Transitioning to the topic of this column is not easy, but with the Leafs having named Auston Matthews their new captain and the ongoing story about Nick Robertson's trade request, it’s time to address these issues.
Nick has been part of the Leafs’ system for several years and has faced injuries throughout his tenure. When healthy, he has shown glimpses of his potential. Under Sheldon Keefe, Nick's ice time was limited, which I understand could be frustrating. Last season, Nick requested a trade, but no deal materialized. With another first-round exit and Keefe’s subsequent firing, replaced by Craig Berube, some hoped a change in coaching might alter Robertson’s stance. Yet, despite discussions with Berube, Robertson still desires a trade, aiming to play as a top-6 forward elsewhere. It’s admirable that Nick has set goals for himself, but now he needs to prove he can achieve them.
My concern with the situation is that Nick may overestimate his current value. The Leafs have likely gauged interest in trading him, but his trade value doesn’t seem high. Toronto lost Tyler Bertuzzi in free agency and needs a left-wing option in their top 6, but Robertson still wants out. For those unaware, Robertson is a Restricted Free Agent this season, meaning the Leafs have full control over his situation. If the Leafs decide to trade him, it will be if they receive a satisfactory offer. If Nick remains unsigned and untraded by the start of training camp, he would have until early December to sign a deal. He might want to take a lesson from William Nylander, whose play suffered significantly after a prolonged holdout.
Nick Robertson is undoubtedly talented, but he seems to lack the mindset his brother Justin has with the Dallas Stars. Justin understands that playing time is earned, not given, and he has worked hard to secure his spot with Dallas. If Nick were to reflect and approach his situation with the same work ethic, he might find success and potentially secure the change of scenery he’s hoping for as an unrestricted free agent.
If I were managing the team, I would handle this situation by making it clear: if you don’t want to seize the opportunity presented to you, that’s your choice. Enjoy watching our games on Sportsnet and TSN from home, and you’ll see players who are eager to play and work hard.
If Nick doesn’t recognize that his current approach is harming his career, he has much to learn. A jersey isn’t just handed to you; it’s earned. If he believes he’s entitled to immediate success, he’s mistaken. If Nick were truly a top-tier forward, teams would be knocking on the Leafs’ door to trade for him. The reality is, teams aren’t showing that level of interest due to his injuries. To prove his worth, he should sign the qualifying offer for this season, demonstrate his value, and then pursue a better opportunity as a UFA. Continuing to sulk and demand a trade only undermines his career prospects. The choice is ultimately his, but if he opts for the path many expect, remember that the Leafs will be featured on TSN and Sportsnet.
Thanks as always for reading, and let’s gear up for a new season.
UPDATE
Yesterday, TSN Insider Darren Dreger, appearing on a TSN Radio morning show, indicated that he believed a deal between Toronto and Nick Robertson was imminent. He was correct, as the Maple Leafs have now announced that Robertson has signed a 1-year contract worth $875,000. It appears Nick has recognized the opportunity available to him, but now it’s up to him to seize it and rise to the occasion. We’ll see how things unfold.
Rest Peacefully
