Leafs Trade Malgin to Avalanche for Dryden Hunt

Well, the blog has returned after I needed to take some time off, and a lot has happened in Leaf land during the month I was away.  From November 19th to December 15th, we saw the Maple Leafs go on an unbelievable run that saw them pick up at least one point in 15 consecutive games which moved our Leafs into a tie for second overall, but things have taken a step back as the Leafs have dropped their last two games in regulation. Knowing this fanbase they are likely thinking the end is near but take a deep breathe because so far in the month of December Toronto has a record of 4-2-1 so, despite two losses things aren’t as bad as they seem.

With the Christmas holiday just around the corner the NHL’s trade freeze takes place at 11:59pm tonight. For those who aren’t aware the trade freeze means that no player can be traded away or claimed off waivers from midnight Monday night to the 28th of this month. Leafs GM Kyle Dubas decided to make a quick trade before the freeze was in place by sending Swiss Forward Denis Malgin to the Colorado Avalanche for Forward Dryden Hunt.

Let’s face it Malgin’s second tenure with the Leafs just didn’t work, and it’s a shame because he was signed to a 1-year deal for the league minimum and Malgin had a positive and productive preseason earning a well-deserved spot on the main roster. Denis would be placed on a line with John Tavares and Mitch Marner who as expected are having real productive seasons. Malgin however, in 23 appearances managed just four points with two goals and two assists. Sending him to Colorado for Dryden Hunt brings some grit to the Leafs lineup and he will slide into Malgin’s spot on the line with Tavares. Hunt who has spent part of this season between the New York Rangers and the Avalanche has two goals so far this season, but he has registered 69 hits in 28 appearances and last season Hunt in 76 games collected 153 hits so it’s clear what kind of game Dryden Hunt likes to play with his six-foot 190-pound frame.

With the Leafs next game coming Tuesday night against the Tampa Bay Lightning right now it is unknown if he will be available for the Leafs, but I think it is more likely that we will see Dryden Hunt’s first game as a Maple Leaf Thursday afternoon against the Philadelphia Flyers.

That’s all for this one thanks as always for reading.
